The PSA
to HCA Bridge is a supplementary course that provides graduates
of the NorQuest College Personal Support Aide program the
opportunity to meet the new Health Care Aide standards. This
course includes a self-study booklet and a skills workshop.
You will learn the following basic knowledge
and skills as they apply to the HCA:
- The role and responsibilities of the
health care aide
- Child care
- Treating skin breakdown
- Oral suctioning
- Tube feeding
- Elimination
- Medication delivery (review)
- Dementia Update
The course includes a written exam and
a skills evaluation component. You will have 16 weeks to complete
the course requirements.
Career Potential
Ninety-nine percent of our HCA graduates find jobs in the field. The range of wages for new graduates is between $10 and $18 per hour. You will be eligible for jobs in these areas:
- Continuing care institutions
- Home care agencies
- Group homes
- Lodges
- Assisted or supportive living
- Day programs
- Specialized care centres and programs
- Acute care hospitals
- Private care
Transferability
Your Health Care Aide education can be used to gain credit with NorQuest’s Practical Nurse program.
Admission Requirements
- Must have graduated from the NorQuest
College Personal Support Aide program after 1996
- Must be employed as a care provider (letter
of proof of employment is required)
Credential
After successfully completing all program requirements, graduates will be awarded a NorQuest Health Care Aide certificate.
Funding Your Education
Students in this program may be eligible for Alberta government funding including costs for tuition, books, and living expenses.
