Facts About Phytochemicals and Antioxidants

Phytochemicals are substances available in plant foods that may provide additional nutrients and protection against problems including cell damage. Phytochemicals include lutein and lycopene.

Antioxidants include some vitamins and minerals that combine with body chemicals and may prevent cell damage. Antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes that may reduce some cancers. Increase the amount of tomatoes and tomato sauces in the diet.
Seek help if acidic foods cause an upset stomach or heartburn.

Lutein is a phytochemical found in leafy green and other vegetables that may reduce the incidence of some eye diseases, cancers and heart disease.

Leafy green vegetables may be associated with kidney stones in susceptible individuals.

Supplements that package nutrients that are associated with decreased incidence of eye disorders often include lutein.

Encourage an adequate daily fluid intake.

Report dietary intake that is particularly high in leafy green vegetables.

Report flank pain or urinary difficulties.

Antioxidants are associated with a decreased incidence of cancer. Vitamin E is considered an antioxidant
