A Practical Nurse must be able to perform physical assessments in order to identify health problems and to plan nursing interventions. When caring for acutely ill clients, a Practical Nurse is required to implement various medical-surgical nursing skills.  These DVDs begin with a demonstration of all the steps involved in using a medical-surgical skill.  This is followed with a demonstration of post-operative care, intravenous therapy, blood transfusions, sterile gloves and supplies, dressing, wound irrigation and packing, suture and staple removal and wound drains.

Alberta LINC 5 Curriculum: Linking Canadian Language Benchmarks
to Essential Skills with an Implementation Guide for Instructors

The Alberta LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) 5 Curriculum is designed to meet the goals and objectives of Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 6 for listening and speaking, and CLB 5 for reading and writing. Additionally, the appropriate workplace and community Essential Skills (ES) have been woven into LINC 5 to better prepare students for further education or entry into the labour market, as well as participation in Canadian community life.

The curriculum contains an Implementation Guide for Instructors to help with some of the classroom planning, The guide is mainly an “idea and sample bank” and has topics, tasks/activities, project ideas, resources, scheduling suggestions, rubrics, and evaluation forms that could be used or adapted by an instructor.

The Alberta LINC 5 Curriculum was funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

This series of reading and writing workbooks is for beginning English as a Second Language students at the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) levels 1-3. The workbooks use authentic language from forms, signs, notices, and other printed information used by Canadians every day. Each of the three books is organized into units by themes and topics that are relevant to immigrants. The units include dialogues, stories, and exercises that help students learn the vocabulary and conventions of functional English. Features of the workbooks include different formats of reading and writing, systematically developed vocabulary, and many illustrations.

English Every Day
(video, 55 minutes; activity book, 180 pages, 1999)

Your English as a Second Language students will be thoroughly entertained while they learn English from Max and Lucy. The video follows the couple as they experience real-life situations in ten thematic vignettes entitled Grocery Shopping, Post Office, Doctor! Doctor!, Apartment Hunting, An Accident Waiting to Happen, Help Wanted, Exchanges, At the Bank, Speed, and Bus Stop. Shot in Edmonton, the vignettes run between four to seven minutes with a focus on the real language encountered in each situation.

The video is targeted at adults who are at the stage one level of Canadian Language Benchmarks. An activity book is available for use with the video. It includes a variety of communicative activities that range in level of ability for each vignette.

The ESL Needs Assessment Tool was developed through project funding from Advanced Education and Technology and Alberta Employment, Immigration and Industry. The purpose of this resource is to provide a strategy for assessing ESL needs in rural communities. The resource not only offers guidelines for assessing needs related to ESL instruction, but also includes sample tools to use in conducting the needs assessment.  You can use this document to guide you through the entire process from determining needs to interpreting and implementing the findings.

Skill Builder

No two students learn at the same pace. This CD-ROM can assist instructors in dealing with English as a Second Language students who are at different levels in their language learning ability. Skill Builder is a self-paced supplementary resource that includes practice activities for developing language skills. The activities, which are designed to provide maximum interaction and minimum frustration, include links to the internet, vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises, listening activities, and grammar tutorials and exercises. Skill Builder has been developed to complement the competencies outlined in Canadian Language Benchmarks and to provide immediate feedback to students while they are doing the activities.

Critical Incidents are tools for increasing our awareness and understanding of human attitudes, expectations, behaviours, and interactions. These tools engage participants on a meaningful, personal level and help them examine attitudes and behaviours that might be critical to their effectiveness in the roles they perform. The Critical Incidents for Intercultural Communication toolkit has been developed from stories and quotes collected in open-ended interviews with students and instructors at NorQuest College and in the broader community. Designed for, but not limited to an educational context, this collection (and the accompanying facilitator and activity guide) seeks to help participants reflect on the complexity of cross-cultural exchanges, while at the same time facilitating their ability to distinguish and develop higher degrees of intercultural sensitivity.

A Framework for Workplace Essential Skills Presentations

Spreading the Word provides workplace education practitioners, employers, and union representatives with a framework for marketing Workplace Essential Skills and English in the Workplace. The presentations are intended to raise awareness and understanding of workplace issues and training considerations within a work context. The package includes scripts and activities for designing 20, 60, and 90-minute presentations. Background information is included so that presentations can be customized to suit a variety of audiences and facilitation styles.
