Unit 1 – Preparing to be a Guide
This course gives licensed practical nurses and other health care professionals credit towards the NorQuest College Mental Health Rehabilitation Certificate or Diploma.
Unit 2 – The Journey Begins
Explore the processes and conditions that lead to a diagnosis of dementia.
Unit 3 – Fuel for the Journey
Focus on establishing and maintaining relationships with clients who have dementia. Learn about effective communication strategies and skills of reminiscing, culturally sensitive care, and care for the caregiver.
Unit 4 – Uncharted Territory
Explore altered responses, relocation stress syndrome and restraint use in dementia care.
Unit 5 – Safety First
Learn about safe environments for the client and techniques for maintaining safety for staff members. Discuss the controversial topic of dementia and driving.
Unit 6 – Journey's End
Discuss palliative care as it relates to dementia end-of-life care. Explore anticipatory grief and finding hope during the grieving process.
